What is the history behind Google Doodles?

Often, when we open the browser on our device, we witness the homepage of Google. Google is the largest search engine in the world and 3/4th of the search across the world happens on Google. Sometimes, the logo of Google looks quite unique. It pays tribute to a local festival, a person, or even an occasion. These are called Doodles.

Google has made the Doodles interactive over the years. There was even a Pacman doodle where people were able to play the game on the doodle.

But what if I told you that the first ever Google Doodle symbolized an out-of-the-office message?

It was 1998, and Google was very young. Google was about to be incorporated as a company and Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted to take their mind off for a while after spending so much time on building the search engine.

They decided to go to the Burning Man Festival in Nevada. But they wanted to let the users know that they would be ‘out-of-office’ and won’t be there to help if the server’s crashed. Hence, they created the Doodle that’s above. It represented the Burning Man Festival.

But people misinterpreted it and thought that Google was celebrating the occasion. It already became popular. Later, when Dennis Hwang joined as an intern at Google, he was tasked with creating the doodles and the rest is history. Dennis Hwang is the ‘Chief Doodler’ of Google.
